Last Friday after the customary pre-show dinner and beers at Elmyr, I went to check out Broken Social Scene and Do Make Say Think at Variety. Broken Social Scene has been one of my favorite bands over the past several years and this was my first opportunity to catch them live. I’ve had Do Make Say Think’s ‘& yet & yet’ album for a while now and really enjoyed it. I haven’t really had much exposure to them aside from that. They did have the Post-Rock thing going for’em. The genre’s more or less dominated my playlists for the past few months so my expectations were pretty high.
Broken Social Scene, for those of you who dont know, is a indie rock band from Toronto, known among other things, for their various collaborations among the indie scene there. Some of their more well known calibrators include Metric’s Emily Haines (so hot), Leslie Feist, and Stars‘ Amy Millan. Amy Millan was with them Friday (her ‘Anthems For A Seventeen Year-Old Girl’….also hot) To be honest, I’m not really sure to what extent Do Make Say Think has work with Broken Social scene in the past, but the show was pretty incestuous with band members from both switching up a good bit between sets. At some points, it almost felt like a Sufjan show with all the musicians on stage…though I don’t recall seeing any winged birds or cheerleaders.
Regardless, i’d have to say the show was probably one of my favorites for the year.
So much energy.
Go Canada.

Last night i decided last minute to see if i could check out Mew at Variety . For some reason i assumed they were headlining…yeah, nope. By the time i got there, I ended up only catching the last few songs of their set. I guess someone was saying that they were originally supposed to play a headliner at the earl but the show sold out so quickly the powers that be decided to add them with Tilly and the Wall and The Black Lips at Variety. Great idea….as long as the other bands didn’t mind that 80% of the crowd left after the opener. Whatever. Mew was amazing ….at least the songs I heard.
They’re apparently working on a spring tour and I’m sure with the response they got here in-town, they’ll be back.
I’ll definitely be there early next time.

Thor Stefanson, son of Armchair Media’s Stefan Stefanson, makes his debut on the Atlanta art scene with his first exhibition of illustrations entitled Skelebots - A Retrospective. No doubt a product of the stimulating environment his fathers creative lifestyle provides, 6 year old Thor seems completely oblivious to the hype. He is sure to be one of the coolest, most imaginative kids you’ll meet. The opening will be this Thursday at Octane Coffee Bar and Lounge.
